Can we stop it?

If we stopped all our emissions today, there would still be some changes to our climate due to the time lag associated with carbon emissions. However, we can affect the amount of change. The best estimates of average global warming over the next 50 years, range from 1.8°C (if we can significantly reduce emissions) to 4.0°C (if we continue at present levels of emissions).

The good news

If we can make large reductions to our emissions now and keep the change to less than 2°C, the current thinking suggests that we can prevent the worst impacts of climate change on our global communities and ecosystems, including those in the UK. We need to do as much as we can, as quickly as possible.

It is important that we all play our part in reducing emissions and also take action to help our local area, and our wildlife, adapt to the changes that are already happening and could happen further in the future.

The global problem of climate change will have a big impact in our local area, causing a number of local problems.
